About Hackney Council

In recent years, Hackney Council has undergone a transformation and has consistently been judged to be one of the most improved authorities in the country. The past five years has seen no new public borrowing and some of the lowest Council Tax increases in the country. Hackney are achieving unprecedented investment in the borough’s infrastructure and services, from the basics such as roads and street lighting to building new schools and leisure facilities.

The Audit Commission recognises Hackney as a Council that is improving strongly and awarded the Council three stars in January 2008. Recent MORI surveys show resident satisfaction has risen by 50 per cent since 2000 – the biggest increase in the country.

Hackney have already secured better public transport via the extension of the East London Line, which will bring a proper connection to the Tube network with four new London Overground stations by 2010.   Hackney crime rates are falling faster than anywhere else in London, education achievements are better than ever and our streets are among the cleanest in London. The newly opened Lido is the only 50 metre outdoor heated pool in London and it is proving popular with visitors, exceeding all expectations. Hackney has achieved this, and many other improvements, with no increase in Council Tax for the second year running.

Hackney is at the heart of the 2012 Games, with almost one third of the Olympic Park site in our borough. This is bringing the most significant regeneration project ever seen in London. Hackney are seizing this opportunity to secure a positive lasting legacy for our residents, businesses and environment.   Hackney is a greatly improved borough and is continuing to develop its services. The staff employed by Hackney are primary in developing these front line services and ensuring the Council continues to be efficient and effective.
